DIY: Handmade Leather Book

The following is a tutorial illustrating how to make an easy handmade book with a leather cover and wrap around cord.

This book would make a lovely gift.

1.
Make yourself a stencil on some copy paper. Rule a rectangle 20 cm X 12 cm.

2.
Place it on your piece of leather (suede side up).

3.
Trace lightly with a ballpoint pen.

4.
Cut out with some sharp scissors.

5.
Cut 20 pieces of paper ( 15 cm X 11 cm).

6.
Fold these in half one by one.
7.
Gather papers together. Use a thick sewing pin to pierce six holes down the fold.

Now place papers on the leather 0.5 cm away from the right hand edge (not seen in photo). Pierce the holes again, through the paper and now through the leather.

8.
Thread a needle with three strands of embroidery thread. Leave the sewing pin in the paper so the pages will stay in place while you work.

9.
Find the second last hole on the right. Take the needle through this hole and push the needle through to outside. Leave a 5 cm tail inside.

10.
Go through the top hole...

11.
...and pull the needle all the way through to the inside.
12.
Go in through the next hole and through the outside.

13.
Through to the inside.

14.
Continue sewing.

15.
Last stitch through the top hole...

16.
...and come out on the inside. Finished sewing.

17.
Take the needle to the position next to the tail thread.
18.
Knot the two ends together twice.

19.
Trim ends.

20.
It should look like this.

21.
Fold the long end of the leather over the short.
Pierce a hole in the flap with your sewing pin.

22.
Cut three 60 cm lengths of embroidery thread (six strands each).

23.
Thread a large needle.

24.
Pull threads through about 15 cm.
Tie a knot at the end and trim.

25.
Put a dab of PVA glue on your knot and let it dry.

26.
Plait your embroidery thread and knot when you get to the end.

27.
Wrap the thread around your book. Lovely!
